The name of the country "Burkina Faso" means "the country of gentlemen", combining the main local language of burkina (meaning "gentlemen") in Moses and faso (meaning "country") in Bambara. The capital Ouagadougou is located in the very center of the country.

It is the country's largest city and cultural and economic center. Burkina Faso has the lowest literacy rate in the world, with only about 23% of its citizens literate. In the capital, there are headquarters of small industrial and commercial companies such as machinery repair, cotton ginning, tanning, rice milling, beer, etc. Most of the export materials such as peanuts, cotton and livestock products in the central and northern parts of the country are distributed here.

The only railway in the territory is to Côte d’Ivoire, so it has close interaction with the country. Burkina Faso is a member of African Airlines; but Burkina Faso’s imports and exports with China are mainly carried by the Beijing Fanyuan International Transport Service Co., Ltd., which is contracted by Ethiopian Airlines, and Ouagadougou has international mechanism.

The population is 17.5 million (2012). There are more than 60 tribes and the official language is French. 20% believe in Islam, and 10% believe in Protestantism and Catholicism. The current currency used by the country is the franc CFA, is also issued by the West African Economic and Monetary Union (L'Union économique et monétaire ouest-africaine) jointly established by these countries. The trade volume between China and Burkina Faso in 2007 was approximately US$200 million, a year-on-year decrease of 6.4%, of which China’s exports were US$43.77 million and imports were US$155 million.
