Review of China’s tea industry exports in 2020: the number of exports of various types of tea has generally declined

According to China Customs data, in December 2020, China’s tea export volume was 24,600 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 24.88%, and the export value was US$159 million, a year-on-year decrease of 17.11%. The average export price in December was US$6.47/kg, compared with 2019. Over the same period rose 10.34%.

From January to December 2020, China’s tea exports totaled 348,800 tons, a decrease of 17,700 tons compared with the whole of 2019, and a year-on-year decrease of 4.86%. In terms of tea category, for the whole year of 2020, except for Pu’er tea, the export volume of other tea categories will decrease in varying degrees. This is the first time China’s tea exports have declined since 2014.

From January to December 2020, China’s tea exports totaled US$2.038 billion, an increase of US$18 million over 2019, a slight increase of 0.89% year-on-year; it has continued to grow since 2013, with an average annual compound growth rate of 7.27%. The growth rate will slow down significantly in 2020.

From January to December 2020, the average export price of Chinese tea was US$5.84/kg, a year-on-year increase of US$0.33/kg, an increase of 5.99%. Since 2013, the average tea export price has continued to grow, with an average annual compound growth rate of 6.23%, which has successively exceeded the 4 USD/kg and 5 USD/kg mark. According to the current compound growth rate, it is expected to exceed 6 USD/kg in 2021.

In terms of tea category, for the whole year of 2020, except for Pu’er tea, the export volume of other tea categories will decrease in varying degrees. The export volume of green tea was 293,400 tons, accounting for 84.1% of the total export volume, a decrease of 1054 tons, a decrease of 3.5%; the export volume of black tea was 28,800 tons, accounting for 8.3% of the total export volume, a decrease of 6,392 tons, a decrease of 18.2%; The export volume of oolong tea was 16,900 tons, accounting for 4.9% of the total export volume, a decrease of 1200 tons, a decrease of 6.6%; the export volume of scented tea was 6,130 tons, accounting for 1.8% of the total export volume, a decrease of 359 tons, a decrease of 5.5%; Pu’er The export volume of tea was 3545 tons, accounting for 1.0% of the total export volume, an increase of 759 tons, an increase of 27.2%.
