Why Does Tea Make You More Thirsty?

It is the most basic function of tea to quench thirst, but many people may have this confusion when they drink tea: the first cup of tea is very effective to quench thirsty, but the more you drink, the more thirsty you become. So what is the reason causes this?

FIRST : Tea has diuretic effect

Tea contains a trace element called caffeine, it has a diuretic effect, which is the biggest reason why tea drinkers feel more and more thirsty. Research shows that compared with drinking water, the volume of urination during tea drinking is about 1.5 times more. Therefore, if you use tea to quench your thirst, it will also accelerate the body's metabolism and promote urine at the same time. And your body fluids will be out of balance, the brain will send out a thirst signal, asking for additional water to maintain balance.

SECOND : Phenolic substances

You may have heard that tea contains a substance known as green tea polyphenols (also called tea tannins). This compound gives tea its astringent taste. However, what many people don’t know is that tannins can bind proteins together. In particular, it binds proteins in saliva together.
See, saliva works as a lubricant for your mouth and throat, reducing friction. The tannins in the tea, however, reduce this capability. This is why your oral cavity and your throat may feel drier than usual once you have had a cup of tea.

THIRD : Quality of tea

Another reason for thirst caused by drinking tea is that there is a problem with the quality of the tea. The growth environment of the tea materials is not good, or low altitude of the tea plant, or the processing technology of tea is rough, the control system is not strict enough, etc, all of these factors will result in the lack or loss of trace elements in tea and cause thirst symptoms.
